Mount Kenya is the second-highest mountain in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Mount Kenya offers a diverse range of unique and amazing landscapes, from lush rainforests to high-altitude moorlands and rugged alpine terrains. A 4 days – 3 nights Mount Kenya trek is a fantastic adventure most especially for those seeking to explore one of the East Africa's highest peaks.
The Chogoria route is highly recommended and arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. It is the driest route up the mountain and the walk beside the Gorges Valley is truly spectacular.
This itinerary allows for gradual acclimatization, which is essential for avoiding altitude sickness and maximize the chances for summit trek success possibilities. The descent by the Sirimon route takes one through some beautiful forest tracks, stunning sceneries and valleys that completes the traverse of the mountain.
Day 1: Nairobi (1750m) - Lake Ellis (3600m).
Our driver will arrive at your hotel early in the morning for a drive to the Lake Ellis via agricultural countryside up to Mount Kenya Bandas where you will stop for lunch. After lunch, we will walk towards Lake Ellis where you will be able to capture scenic views of Mugi Hill, Ithanguni, and the Giant’s Billiards Table; all spectacular land formations found nowhere else in Africa. Traversing the area following the river down the road-head and upstream for about 3 km you can eye catch the foreground scenery and flora for its exceptional beauty and uniqueness found nowhere else in Africa. We will continue with the hike up to the secluded campsite on the shores of Lake Ellis at an altitude of 3400m (3hrs walks).
Distance: Approximately 214.2 kilometers
Time: 3 – 4 hours
Altitude Loss: 850m ascent
Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at Lake Ellis campsite.
Day 2: Lake Ellis - Mintos Hut (4,200m).
After the early morning sunrise breakfast, we will leave the camp for a hike following the ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours to eventually join the tourist trail on the famous Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. You will be able to capture the eye-catching views over the Gorges Valley and the surrounding plains towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands zones. We will take a stop at a small stream crossing for lunch and a short rest before continuing for a short time hike to the Mintos Hut located at 4200m for a well prepared hot dinner and overnight.
The late afternoon will be spent relaxing at the camp, though a 10-minute walk to the "Temple" is well worth the effort for a better acclimatization. The “Temple” is a 150 meters’ vertical cliff that gets its name for the bending over position when peering over the edge whereby hikers look as if they are bowing or praying. An early night dinner and rest is highly recommended as you are attempting the summit early the next day.
Distance: Approximately 12 kilometers
Time: 4 - 5 hours
Altitude Loss: 600m ascent
Accommodation: Dinner and overnight at Mintos Hut.
Day 3: Mintos camp (4200m) - Point Lenana (4,985m)- Liki North camp (3,900m).
The summit attempt before dawn normally starts at 0300hrs for a hike of about three hours up to Point Lenana located at 4985m. It is more attracting to reach to the hiker's summit in time to watch the most amazing African sunrise as it shines forth unique colours yonder the clouds of the dawn. After having taken a couple of memorable pictures, you will ascend back to Shipton camp for breakfast. After a well prepared breakfast, begin a 3-hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Liki North camp (3,900m).
