Mount Kenya offers a diverse range of unique and amazing landscapes, from lush rainforests to high-altitude moorlands and rugged alpine terrains. A 3 days – 2 nights Mount Kenya trek is a fantastic adventure most especially for those seeking to explore one of the East Africa's highest peaks.

The Sirimon Route is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kenya, offering stunning sceneries and a relatively gradual ascent to the Summit. This itinerary allows for gradual acclimatization, which is essential in avoiding altitude sickness and maximizing the chances for summit trek success possibilities.

Day 1: Sirimon Gate (2,660) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

Day 2: Trek from Old Moses Camp (3,300m) to Shipton Camp (4,200m)

Day 3: Trek Old Moses Camp to Point Lenana (155 km) and Descend to Old Moses Camp for Transport to Nairobi (155 km)

Your Plan

Day 1: Sirimon Gate (2,660) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

On arrival, you will have a briefing and equipment check with your trekking guide to make sure that you have all the necessary gears for the trek. Followed up by an early morning transfer from your hotel in Nairobi to the Nanyuki village town as we head to the Sirimon Gate of the Mount Kenya National Park (2,600 meters) with your well packed lunch box to be taken at a perfect picnic spot. Your 4-hour trekking expedition will lead you through the rainforest and across the bamboo, rosewood and heather zones. Today you will have a 740 meters gain as you head to the Old Moses Camp (3,340 meters) for overnight on half board basis.

Time: 3 - 4 hrs

Altitude gain: 680 meters’ elevation

Day 2: Trek from Old Moses Camp (3,300m) to Shipton Camp (4,200m)

You will take an early morning breakfast at the Old Moses Camp before heading to the Mackinder’s Valley with a total gain of about 900 meters’ elevation. Our trek today will take about 8 hours walking heading to the Shipton Camp (4,200 meters), situated just below the glaciers and jagged peaks of bare rock with giant lobelias and groundsels that surrounds the main peaks of Mount Kenya. Prior to arriving at the camp, you will take a short rest before taking an early dinner and well-earned rest preparing for the night summit trek to point Lenana.

Distance: Approximately 14-15 kilometers

Time: 6 - 7 hours of hiking

Altitude gain: 900 meters

Meals: Full Board Basis

Accommodation: Shipton Camp (basic huts or tents)

Day 3: Trek Old Moses Camp to Point Lenana (155 km) and Descend to Old Moses Camp for Transport to Nairobi (155 km)

The Summit trek attempt to point Lenana will begging at around 3:00 am heading to about 4,985 meters’ highest point. For the night summit trek, you will require a bright head torch as you will pass through the steep screes and bare rock track in the strenuous dark night. Part of this section is tough, as you will be going through frozen scree and requires some scrambling on the final strech to reach the Lenana Peak in time for sunrise. On this day, you will gain about 750 meters’ elevation.
Take some photos and begin the descent back to Shipton Camp for a well prepared hot breakfast to resize your belts. You will then continue the descent towards the Old Moses Camp for the transfer back to Nairobi. You will arrive in Nairobi in the evening and for a drop-off at your previous hotel. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Mount Kenya is in central Kenya, within Mount Kenya National Park. It lies approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of Nairobi.

There are three main routes:
