Located 283 km west of Dar es Salaam, the park was established in 1964 and up to now is widely considered the country’s 4th largest national park. Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most underrated wildlife destination and the best wildlife sanctuaries in East Africa. It is generally compared to the Africa’s-famous Serengeti national park located in the in the northern part of Tanzania. The Mikumi national park wide open landscapes beyond the flood plains makes it undoubtedly a beautiful park.
The park is easily accessible from Dar-es-Salaam, making it the perfect southern Tanzanian safari destination. However, comparing to the great Serengeti national park in terms of tourist flow, the Mikumi national park is not often crowded. It therefore gives you an opportunity to experience the true wild nature of the jungle for a truly magical experience. This is also a good park to visit if you are coming from Zanzibar or Dar-es-Salaam. An additional cultural experience at a nearby Maasai village is on day 3.<br>
